Update from the Yacht ‘Ocean Pearl’

Seven weeks after taking possession of the ‘Ocean Pearl’, we set off from the dock and headed for familiar cruising grounds – Annapolis to New England.

As you might imagine we fell back in step with life on the boat easily but it’s been a surreal experience. Gazing out the pilothouse windows it seemed familiar but indeed…it was not! We haven’t cruised in US coastal waters since the summer of 2009 (GSSR)…and, oh yea…it’s a very different boat!

That said – we are enjoying our new to us, Nordhavn 64 and working on that comfortable rhythm we had all those years on the beloved ‘Grey Pearl’.

Our boat Ocean Pearl is performing well overall. The idea of the New England cruise was not only to get out of Washington DC in August but also to take the boat on a “shake down” cruise. Putting her to the test we had a steering fluid leak, head malfunction, dingy motor gear freeze up, hydraulic alternator malfunction, hydraulic pump actuator fail, sea chest ball valve fail, wing engine exhaust leak, and an air conditioner compressor lose Freon. All and all not bad and nothing that was a critical failure – i.e. stopping forward way.

A noticeable difference cruising back on the USA East Coast is the amount of larger Nordhavn boats we have seen. Back in early 2000, we seldom saw another boat like we had, an N62 which was the largest model Nordhavn manufactured at that time. We did see a lot of the smaller but legendary N46 models.

After a calm, full moon lit overnight cruise from Atlantic City direct to Nantucket we moored right next to an N55. And shortly after that we spied 3 other N64’s. In the last 10 years, as many know, Nordhavn has measurably stepped up the building of bigger boats, and is innovating (Nordsailors, Nordfishers, etc…). There’s a lot of buzz about the new N120. We’re just happy with the smallest model of the bigger boat models.

We enjoyed several ports, Edgartown, MA, Falmouth, MA, Newport, RI, Block Island, RI and, lastly Mystic, CT.

Clearly, the highlight of our trip was a visit from our GSSR, Asian cruising boat buddies, Carol & Steven Argosy. Their boat, ‘Seabird’ is resting in Phuket, Thailand. They were in Phuket when our boat was destroyed and we had to have a reunion back here in the USA. We spent a perfect weather week cruising the areas of New England that they have boated in from the time they were kids.

As a side note…the Argosy’s were kind enough to salvage from the old boat one set of a pair of stainless line holders we had made up when we were in France years ago. Of course, it was pretty messed up and they got someone to clean and polish it. This is a real sentimental treasure for us. Turns out a few other items off the ‘Pearl’ started to show up in the used marine chandleries around Phuket. Here’s a photo of our old anchor put to good use!

Obviously… what you’ve read so is far short of our usual “adventure” cruising dispatches…I mean nothing says adventure and intrigue like the Malaccan Straits!

We couldn’t agree more. Soooo… there are plans in the making to get some international water under the keel. Of recent, there’s been some dialogue amongst the GSSR boats on how we could rendezvous. Recall that Ken and Roberta Williams are in Turkey and the Argosy’s in Thailand so there is going to be some voyaging involved! For us…it’s just great to be back in the game!

Near term we have returned to Annapolis with the boat being worked on. We’ll head south for Florida after Thanksgiving…stay tuned!

Many have asked for some more photos of the boat…here they are!

  1. With a smile on my face and “butterflies” in my belly, I’m sitting here in my studio ready to re-read your post. Despite the tragedy you’ve gone through, searching for another boat to continue your quest, and the hiccups in your shakedown cruise, you manage to see the positive, the bright side, the opportunity and potential to explore the world once again. I love that. It is wonderful that you’ve reached out to the world and included us in your journey!

We look forward to more posts and possibilities.

    Warm regards…

    Patti

    PS… She is a beauty.
